What Is Mole Fraction?

The mole fraction of a component is the number of moles of that component divided by the total number of moles of all components in the mixture.

Mole fraction is a dimensionless ratio between 0 and 1, and the sum of the mole fractions of all components equals exactly 1.

Formula

xᵢ = moles of component i ÷ total moles

Example: Mole fraction of A in a mix of 2 mol A and 3 mol B:

xA = 2 ÷ (2 + 3) = 0.4
